CENTURY’s English Written IA can be completed as part of our existing English assessment or as a standalone exercise. Learners are presented with a long-form writing question marked by CENTURY’s AI, which is specifically trained to mark Functional Skills responses, with results returned in an instant.
Learners will be assessed on areas such as vocabulary, grammar and content. It will then provide you with the functional skills level your learner is working towards (E1-L2) and a sub-level (Lower, Middle, Higher).
How does it work?
The learner will be presented with a writing question, which will direct them to write 150-250 words on a given brief. Once the learner has read the guidance, they are able to complete the writing task and review this before pressing ‘Submit’.
How do I access the learner’s response?
Once a learner has submitted their response, results are instantly available in CENTURY via the Assessments tab. Their full response can be viewed from the dashboard by selecting the ‘English Written Initial Assessment’ from the assessment selector from within the learner’s assessment cohort.

Answer flagging
When reviewing responses, you may notice that an answer has been flagged. This will be indicated by an icon next to the grade. By clicking into the box, you can review the response in full.
An answer may be flagged for a number of reasons, including;
The answer is too short to be given an appropriate mark by the marking model
It uses offensive language
It does not attempt to answer the question being asked
A student has copied and pasted text from another source
A student has typed in random characters and/or padded the answer
How do I see a list of my flagged answers?
A toggle can be applied at the top of the page to show you only responses that our marking model has flagged, so these can be filtered and reviewed easily.
