What is a diagnostic?

A diagnostic is a set of questions that allow the artificially intelligent recommendation engine to determine what a student does and doesn't know.

How would you use it to assess gaps in a student’s knowledge?

Diagnostics are an excellent way to assess gaps in knowledge, either in whole classes or for individual students. Teachers can set the diagnostic at the beginning or the end of a topic to monitor students’ progress and assess their understanding. Results from the diagnostics and any gaps in knowledge can be seen on Nuggets tab of the teacher dashboard. Nuggets can then be set accordingly to address common misconceptions.

For articles on how to use the Nuggets tab go to 'How to use the Teacher Dashboard'.

Can I reset diagnostics?

As soon as a course is assigned, diagnostics will appear in a student’s pathway automatically. Once they have been completed they will not be visible to students in their My Courses tab, unlike the learning nuggets. You can however reset diagnostics to be completed again.

To reset a diagnostic for your class, we recommend using the Planner tool. You can find instructions on how to set nuggets via the Planner here.

You can also set diagnostics to individual students by using the Assignments function. Instructions on how to set nuggets as an assignment can be found here.

What do students experience in a diagnostic?

Students will not receive feedback on whether they are responding correctly or incorrectly to the questions in the diagnostic and will not see their overall score on the results page at the end. This is so that diagnostics are not seen by students as tests, more as a way for the platform to understand their strengths and areas for improvement. If a student does not know the answer, they can use the ‘I don’t know’ button. CENTURY can then personalise each student’s pathway to fill in their individualised learning gaps.

How do I set my students more than one diagnostic?

As soon as your students have complete one diagnostic, the rest will disappear and their pathway will be populated with nuggets. Students are not able to search for a diagnostic on CENTURY, so if you would like your students to do more than one diagnostic, you will need to set these for your class using the Planner tab.
