What are Smart Assignments?

Smart Assignments take personalised homework to the next level—combining teacher expertise with AI-driven recommendations to help every learner thrive. With a few simple clicks, you are able to set individualised homework, saving you time, whilst keeping you, the teacher, in control.

CENTURY’s intelligent recommendations ensure that each student receives learning content designed to maximise their understanding and progress, in a way that’s also easy for teachers to track work and set goals.

Any assignment can be made into a Smart Assignment - they can fit as easily into a teacher’s workday as regular assignments!

Once set, Smart Assignments will be identifiable on your Assignments dashboard with the small star shown in the image below.

How to set up a Smart Assignment

Smart Assignments can be accessed through the Assignments tab of the Teacher Dashboard or in a Class Dashboard - just like a regular assignment. A Smart Assignment can include Smart Nuggets (selected by CENTURY’s AI to be the right level of challenge for each learner) as well as nuggets selected by the teacher.

In the Teacher Dashboard or Class Dashboard, select the ‘Assignments’ tab.
Click ‘Create Assignment’, then continue to set up your assignment as normal.
Next, you can select specific nuggets that you’d like students to work through. Students need to complete any teacher-set nuggets first before Smart Nuggets will unlock.

You will also be given the option to add Smart Nuggets to the assignment. You can specify which course to set Smart Nuggets from, and how many of them students should complete (up to 5 Smart Nuggets). This allows CENTURY to recommend the best nuggets for each student, instead of the teacher having to choose the exact nuggets every time.

Note 1: If you are setting up a Smart Assignment for multiple classes or students, you will need to ensure that they all have at least one course in common from which the Smart Nuggets will be selected.

Note 2: Smart Assignments can only be set for one course at a time. To set Smart Assignments for several courses or subjects, please create separate assignments for each course.

Once the assignment starts, students will always see teacher-selected nuggets first (where available) and then move onto personalised recommendations, with their results appearing in the Assignment Markbook for you to track.

Reporting on Smart Assignments

Teachers can track student completion in the same way as a normal assignment - in the Assignment Markbook. Any teacher-set nuggets will appear first, followed by Smart Nuggets in the order that the students completed them.

To see which nugget was recommended to a student along with details on how they performed, click on the nugget score for that student.

Smart Assignments use cases

Smart Assignments can be used in a variety of ways in your classroom, such as:

Setting personalised homework for the whole term or year: Set an assignment containing only Smart Nuggets and duplicate it for every week of the term or academic year. It can only take a few minutes to prepare, while ensuring students see personalised homework consistently.
Setting cover work: Can’t make it to a class? Or covering for another teacher in a completely different subject? Easily set a Smart Assignment to keep a class engaged and challenged, without needing to be an expert on the subject.
Use Smart Assignments in class to keep students focussed on a task while you spend 1-to-1 time with those needing more attention.
AI-driven smart homework: Save time and auto-set homework using our recommendation engine, ensuring homework is personalised to each student’s individual needs.

Smart Assignments FAQs

How do Smart Assignments work for students?

Students must complete teacher-set nuggets before Smart Nuggets will unlock in an assignment. Once they’re unlocked, students will only ever be able to see one Smart Nugget recommendation at a time.

Why aren’t any courses showing up when I try to set a Smart Assignment?

This could either be because:

You haven’t added any students or classes to the assignment
Students or classes lack common courses: If students or classes are added but no courses are showing, it may be because they don’t have any assigned courses in common. A teacher with manager permissions can resolve this by going to Class Admin and updating the courses assigned to the students/classes to ensure alignment. Follow these steps to make the necessary update.

To fix this, ensure that any students and/or classes you add have the right courses assigned.

Are the Smart Nuggets the same for all students in my class?

No, Smart Nuggets adapt for each student. Some students may see the same nuggets as others, and some may not - but they will always be from the same course. If you want students to complete the same nugget, you can set those specific nuggets in the assignment.

Do multiple attempts work with Smart Nuggets?

Yes, once a student completes a recommended Smart Nugget, that nugget gets locked into their assignment. They can then complete multiple attempts of that particular nugget.
