Practical Ways to Use CENTURY for SEND Support

Modified on Thu, 24 Jul at 2:49 PM

CENTURY is an adaptive platform designed to deliver truly differentiated provision for every student. By constantly assessing student understanding, identifying individual strengths and weaknesses, and strategically revisiting concepts at optimal intervals to strengthen memory, CENTURY empowers all learners, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), to make sustained progress and retain knowledge for the long term.

Here are various ways you can leverage CENTURY to effectively support learners with SEND:

Supporting Reluctant Learners & Building Confidence

  • Personalised Pace: There are no time limits on completing nuggets, allowing students to work at their own pace on material personalised to their needs, which can significantly boost motivation and reduce anxiety.

  • Build Confidence: Start students on a lower level course to build foundational skills and foster a sense of achievement. Your Account Manager or support@century.tech can assist with class setup.

  • Targeted Personalisation with Smart Assignments: Use Smart Assignments to ensure students receive homework that is automatically personalised based on their individual needs, increasing relevance and engagement.

  • Guided Independent Learning: Teach students how to effectively use the learning material within nuggets, or encourage them to follow their Recommended Path independently. CENTURY will automatically fill learning gaps, recommend retrieval-based learning, interleave subjects, and identify topics for Focus and Stretch, supporting self-directed progress.

Addressing Strengths and Weaknesses & Low Ability Learners

  • Differentiated Courses: Set courses appropriate for your learner's specific level, such as the Functional Skills courses. Your Account Manager or support@century.tech can assist with which courses are most suitable for your learners.

  • Targeted Assignments: Set specific Assignments to fill known gaps in knowledge or pre-teach concepts before a lesson.

  • Data-Driven Grouping: Use the Nuggets tab’s question-level analysis of diagnostic results to identify common skill gaps or misconceptions. This data can help you group students by ability for targeted class-based or small-group interventions.

  • Smart Assignments for Adaptive Support: When creating homework, Smart Assignments allow you to set a starting point for all students, then the AI recommends the most appropriate next nugget, personalising the work effortlessly.

  • Learner Dashboard Insights: Students can view their own Learner Dashboard to review their strengths and areas for improvement, as well as their Focus and Stretch recommendations. Discuss specific areas to work on, or they can click on nugget recommendations to start learning immediately.

Supporting School Refusers, Long-Term Absences & Missed Lessons

  • Catching Up on Missed Content: For missed lessons, easily create homework assignments that are personalised. You can select specific nuggets corresponding to the missed lesson, or set a Smart Assignment which will suggest relevant learning within a topic.

  • Addressing Learning Gaps: For school refusers or long-term absences, set diagnostics which correspond to topics being taught in class. CENTURY will assess students in the relevant area and then automatically send them to nuggets that will support and stretch them, effectively filling gaps in knowledge.

  • Independent Catch-Up: In emergencies or for long-term absence, students can follow their Recommended Path independently across subjects. CENTURY will automatically fill gaps, recommend retrieval-based learning, interleave subjects, and identify topics for Focus and Stretch. Smart Assignments also make it easy to track their progress.

Enhancing Engagement and Motivation

  • Built-in Motivation: To foster sustained engagement, CENTURY incorporates gamified elements such as badges and streaks. These features acknowledge achievement and encourage consistent interaction, celebrating incremental progress and boosting self-efficacy, particularly vital for learners who may benefit from external motivators to build intrinsic drive. You may also want to incorporate CENTURY into the day-to-day rewards scheme used to encourage positive participation on the platform.

Accessibility Features: Customising the Learning Experience

CENTURY offers various features to support learners with diverse accessibility needs:

  • Captions on learning material: All learning videos on CENTURY have captions to support student learning. Learn more about enabling captions here.

  • Colour overlay: Learners can apply colour overlays within nuggets on CENTURY; some students will find this reduces visual distortions and makes text easier to read. Learn how to activate colour overlays here.

  • Adjustable Video Playback Speed: Learners can slow down or speed up video content to match their individual processing pace, aiding comprehension for students with cognitive, auditory, or language processing differences.

Parent / Guardian Engagement: A Crucial Partnership

Parent / Guardian  engagement is profoundly beneficial for students with SEND, as they possess unique insights into their child’s needs, strengths, and challenges. Encourage parent / guardian access to CENTURY’s Guardian Portal to view progress, strengths, and areas for improvement on the platform.

If you want support in setting up the Guardian Portal, contact your Account Manager or support@century.tech.
