Using CENTURY for homework / pre-teaching

Modified on Tue, 27 Aug at 12:46 PM

CENTURY makes it easy to set homework, assignments, or pre-teaching activities for your class. It is also highly customisable, for example if you want to set different work for different groups of students.

Click the links below for suggestions and usage models on using CENTURY to:

Setting specific work to your whole class

Diagnostics to identify learning gaps

When moving onto a new topic, set the topic diagnostic for your learners to complete as homework. This will allow your learners' Recommended Paths (RPs) to be updated to reflect their individual learning gaps in the topic.

Similarly, you can set diagnostics in the run up to exams so that students’ RPs are updated to plug their current learning gaps. You will be able to view the topic misconceptions using the data in the Nuggets tab of the Teacher Dashboard to help support your teaching.

Pre-teaching

You can set specific nuggets within a topic ahead of your lesson to introduce your learners to the concept in advance and tailor your lesson accordingly.

Align with weekly lesson plans

Set your learners' nuggets which align with your learning for that particular week and ask the learners to work through these nuggets independently. Once all of your learners have completed the nuggets, you can analyse the data in the Nuggets tab of the Teacher Dashboard to discover any group misconceptions. You can then use this data to inform your teaching for the week.

Setting specific work for different groups of learners

Note: To set different assignments for groups of learners within the same class, you will need to create separate classes on CENTURY for each group.

Revision prep

Depending on your learners' areas of weakness in the run up to exams, set different groups of learners various topic diagnostics using Assignments so that their Recommended Paths are updated to fill in their current learning gaps. You can then analyse the data in the Nuggets tab of the Teacher Dashboard to discover any group misconceptions and use this data to tailor your revision prep.

Catch up support

If you have learners who are off school due to travel or sickness, set them nuggets via Assignments on CENTURY to mirror what has been taught in class to ensure they are keeping on track with their work. You will be able to see when the work has been completed and the results on the Teacher Dashboard.

Setting nuggets outside of your assigned course

For learners who need an additional challenge, you may wish to set nuggets from a course which has not been assigned to your class, such as nuggets from an English Literature text or from Maths Secondary Higher. You can do so via the Assignments feature.

Homework without needing to set work for your class

Work through the Recommended Path

Learners work through their RP, with the expectation that they need to complete a set number of nuggets. Each nugget takes around 15 minutes to complete and learners can filter the subjects that appear on their RP to work on specific subjects.

Work through My Courses independently

Learners can use their My Courses tab to complete nuggets they would like to focus on or that you tell them to complete. This could be based on feedback from exam prep or topics completed in class recently.

They can also view their own Learner Dashboard and review their strengths and areas for improvement, as well as Focus and Stretch recommendations. They can click on any of these nugget names in these sections and will be taken directly to the nugget.
