Using CENTURY in school / the classroom

Modified on Tue, 3 Sep at 9:55 AM

CENTURY is flexible enough to be used in various ways within your school or classroom, depending on how big your groups are and how they can access devices to use CENTURY.

Click the links below for suggestions and usage models on using CENTURY in:

Whole class in a computer room

Work through the Recommended Path (RP) independently

Learners work through their RP independently, with the expectation that they need to complete a set number of nuggets depending on the lesson length. Each nugget takes around 15 minutes to complete and learners can filter the subjects that appear in the RP to work on specific subjects.

Align with weekly lesson plans

Set your learners' an assignment containing nuggets which align with your teaching for that particular week and ask the learners to work through these nuggets independently. Once all of your learners have completed the nuggets, you can analyse the data in the Nuggets tab of the Teacher Dashboard to identify any class misconceptions. You can then use this data to inform your teaching

Address misconceptions as a class

In order to help students to identify common misconceptions, display the data from the Nuggets tab on the board so that the class can work together to determine the correct answers. You can then access the nugget from your My Courses tab as a class before reviewing the data to check if the common misconceptions have been addressed.

Independent revision

When using CENTURY to support revision, learners can use the feedback from their mock exams to identify their areas of weakness and use the My Courses tab to find nuggets to support their revision.

Learners can also view their own Learner Dashboard to review their strengths and areas for improvement. They can then pick a nugget to work on based on CENTURY’s recommendations.

Whole class has access to 1-to-1 devices in the classroom

Align with weekly lesson plans

Set your learners' nuggets to complete as either a starter, main activity or plenary. Once all of your learners have completed the nuggets, you can analyse the data in the Nuggets tab of the Teacher Dashboard to discover any class misconceptions. You can then use this data to inform your teaching.

Use our termly planner document to keep track of the nuggets that align with your scheme of work.

Topic diagnostics

When moving onto a new topic, set the topic diagnostic for your learners to complete in class. This will allow your learners' Recommended Paths to update and reflect their individual learning gaps in the topic. You will be able to view their topic misconceptions in the Nuggets tab of the Teacher Dashboard.

Note: Topic diagnostics are not available for all courses.

Cover lessons

CENTURY can be used for a cover lesson if needed. A member of staff can set nuggets to the class to align with the topics being taught. Learners can complete these assigned nuggets or complete work from their Recommended Path instead.

Support or extension work

If you have any gifted and talented learners in your class, you can set them extension nuggets to complete. Let the learners know which nuggets to search for in their My Courses tab, or set an assignment for them with the right nuggets (you will have to create a new class with just these students in to do this). The same can be done with a group of learners with a particular learning gap.

Alternatively, learners can view their own Learner Dashboard and review their Strengths and Areas for Improvement, as well as Focus and Stretch recommendations. They can click on any of the nugget names in these sections and will be taken directly to the nugget.

In the classroom with limited access to devices

Carousel learning

When setting a class activity, groups of learners can take turns completing the activity on CENTURY whilst others are completing offline resources (such as CENTURY’s TeacherGENie worksheets). You will just need to let the learners know the nugget to search for in their My Courses tab or set it through Assignments.

Supported or extension work

If learners complete their work in class, they can use CENTURY as an extension. This also applies to learners who have very quickly mastered a topic in class, or a group of learners with a particular learning gap. You can either:

  • Direct learners to which nuggets to work on in their My Courses tab

  • Let them choose a nugget to work on based on their Strengths and Areas for Improvement from their Learner Dashboard

  • Set them an assignment with the right nuggets to work on (you will have to create a new class on CENTURY with just these students in to do this)

If you have a TA in your class, they can work with a small group on specific nuggets. They can use the learning material as a teaching aid, working through the questions together or allowing learners to work independently until they need assistance.

Discuss questions as a class

In order to help students to identify common misconceptions, display the data from the Nuggets tab on the board so that the class can work together to determine the correct answers. You can then access the nugget from your My Courses tab as a class before reviewing the data to check if the common misconceptions have been addressed.

Align with weekly lesson plans

You can use the questions from a nugget as a starter or plenary for your class and use the answers to inform your teaching and the common misconceptions you may need to address. Use our termly planner document to keep track of the nuggets that align with your scheme of work.

You can also generate custom worksheets on specific nuggets using our new TeacherGENie feature, which can then be printed and distributed in class. Learn more about TeacherGENie here.

With small groups of learners in school

Supported learning

If you have a TA in your class, they can work with a small group on specific nuggets while you work with the rest of the class. TA’s can use the learning material as a teaching aid, working through the questions together or allowing learners to work independently until they need assistance.

Similarly, if you have any learners who require extra support in your class, you can set them a different set of nuggets to work through. Let the learners know which nuggets to work through and they can search for them in their My Courses tab with the help of a teacher or TA.

Working independently

Learners work through their Recommended Path independently, with the expectation that they need to complete a set number of nuggets with the support of the teacher or TA if needed. Each nugget takes around 15 minutes to complete and learners can filter the subjects that appear on their pathway to work on specific subjects.

Learners can also view their own Learner Dashboard and review their strengths and areas for improvement. You can then discuss any areas the learners should work on and encourage them to work through these from their My Courses tab.

Similarly, learners can use the feedback from their mock exams to discover their areas of weakness and use the My Courses tab to find nuggets to support their revision.

Align with weekly lesson plans

Set your learners' nuggets which align with your learning for that particular week and ask the learners to work through these nuggets independently, or with the help of a teacher or TA if needed. Once all of your learners have completed the nuggets, you can analyse the data in the Nuggets tab of the Teacher Dashboard to discover any group misconceptions. You can then use this data to inform your teaching.

Discuss questions as a class

You can display the data from the Nuggets Tab of the Teacher Dashboard so that the group can discuss answers, spot common misconceptions and work together to determine the correct answers. You can then work through the nugget as a class from your My Courses tab, or you can ask your learners to complete the nugget again using their My Courses tab before reviewing the data to check if the common misconceptions have been addressed.

Teaching aid

You can use the learning material from nuggets as part of your teaching. Find the nugget in your My Courses tab and display the video or slideshow to the class, then work through the content together.

If you are using the learning material on screen during an online lesson, you can annotate the slideshow to expand on the material. You can also set the nugget to be completed as homework if you do not have time to go through the questions in the classroom.

You can also generate custom worksheets on specific nuggets using our new TeacherGENie feature, which can then be printed and distributed in class. Learn more about TeacherGENie here.
